Okakambe Stables was established in the early 1990’s by Kathrin, evolving from a small horse riding school into a unique equine experience based in Swakopmund, Namibia. Over the decades, Okakambe has grown into far more than a riding operation — it has become a place of connection, learning, and adventure where people, horses, and nature meet.
Situated where the vast Namib Desert meets the Atlantic Ocean, our riders experience one of the most extraordinary landscapes in the world. The famous Moon Landscape, with its dramatic valleys and ancient desert formations, creates a riding environment that feels both timeless and otherworldly.
At Okakambe, riding is not only about the ride — it is about the relationship between horse and human.
Our philosophy
Equine Ethology and Natural Horsemanship
Our work with horses is guided by the principles of equine ethology, the study of natural horse behaviour. We believe that understanding the horse’s instincts, communication, and herd dynamics allows riders to develop a deeper and more respectful partnership.
Through our approach, riders learn to:
- understand horse behaviour
- build trust through calm leadership
- ride with balance and awareness
- experience the horse as a partner rather than simply transport

Volunteer program
Okakambe also hosts an international volunteer program, welcoming people who want to experience Namibia in a deeper and more meaningful way.
Volunteers participate in the daily life of the stables while learning about:
• horse care and stable management
• equine behaviour and training
• rescue and rehabilitation work
• community connection and social responsibility
Many volunteers describe their time here as life-changing.
Through working with the horses and engaging with the local environment, volunteers often discover a strong sense of:
